Each year we teach 1,500+ students to love to write!

The Missoula Writing Collaborative teaches literary competence, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and artistic joy through creative writing. We place writers in school classrooms, after-school programs, youth homes and other venues to show young people the power of words and help them find their voices as writers.

See for yourself in this 7-minute documentary why we love what we do!

Each morning we'll meet on the University of Montana campus to write, share and play with words. Each students will receive with their own Writing Kit (notebook & pencils) and the opportunity to work closely with a Missoula Writing Collaborative instructors. We'll visit the Montana Museum of Art and Culture to write ekphrastic poetry, take our notebooks outside to write around campus, and have lots of time to explore the world of words together.

The week will culminate with a reading for parents on Friday at 12pm.

Full Day Camp (9AM - 5PM)

Our full day sessions offer an opportunity for students to build on their morning experience. We'll explore the Missoula community and its varied ecosystems by foot and bus. These excursions provide guided opportunities for developing writers to observe and write about the world around them. This year we'll visit and learn about:

  • Historic Fort Missoula
  • The kitchens at Caffe Dolce for pasta making and gelato
  • The Clark Fork River with the Watershed Education Network
  • How movement can inspire poetry with Turning the Wheel

Students need to pack their own lunch, but snacks will be provided throughout the day.

Intensive fiction, poetry, and songwriting for high school students.

The Missoula Writing Collaborative is offering two intensive writing workshops this summer. Students will have the opportunity to work with published writer Caroline Patterson to write flash fiction and poetry, or local musician Caroline Keys of the Best Westerns to write songs. This camp is for anyone with a passion or interest in writing, whether you are just starting or have been penning stories for years.  Each day you'll write, read, and revise your writing. On Wednesday, the two groups will take a day on the town to look for inspiration at coffee shops and the art museum and to share work on KGFM radio. An optional reading featuring student work will take place in September 2019.
