Do you have a writer in the house?
Words With Wings is an intensive writing summer camp for students entering grades 3-8. Classes take place on the University of Montana campus and participants receive one-on-one attention from professional writers from the Missoula Writing Collaborative. Every student receives their own copy of the 2021 Words With Wings anthology (with their own writing inside!) and the opportunity to read their work at the virtual 2021 Montana Book Festival.
2021 Operating Guidelines: In 2020 we held a smaller version of our summer camp with full COVID-19 operating guidelines in place. This year we are hoping to be back to a full roster of students! We will be actively monitoring the guidance set out by Missoula City-County Health Department and will form our operating guidelines accordingly. Our primary concern in operating are summer camp will always be the health and safety of students and staff.

Morning Camp (9AM - 12PM)
Each morning we'll meet on the University of Montana campus to write, share and play with words. Each student will receive with their own Writing Kit (notebook & pencils) and the opportunity to work closely with a Missoula Writing Collaborative instructors. We'll visit the Montana Museum of Art and Culture to write ekphrastic poetry, take our notebooks outside to write around campus, and have lots of time to explore the world of words together.
The week will culminate with an outdoor reading for parents on Friday.
Full Day Camp (9AM - 5PM)
Our full day sessions offer an opportunity for students to build on their morning experience. We'll explore the Missoula community and its varied ecosystems by foot. These excursions provide guided opportunities for developing writers to observe and write about the world around them. This year we'll visit and learn about:
- The Clark Fork River with the Watershed Education Network
- Montana's rich history at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula
- How movement can inspire poetry with Turning the Wheel
- Trees from all over the world at the Arboretum
Students need to pack their own lunch, but pre-packaged snacks will be provided throughout the day.
Refund Policy: We are able to give full refunds up to July 2. After this we can give 50% refunds up to the start of camp. Once camp begins we cannot give refunds.
About The Missoula Writing Collaborative
Each year we teach over 2,000 kids to love to write. Founded in 1994, we teach literary competence, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and artistic joy through creative writing. We place writers in school classrooms, after-school programs, youth homes and other venues to show young people the power of words and help them find their voices as writers.
This year our online payment system includes a small processing fee. For more information about either of our summer programs or inquiries about scholarships contact Nick Littman, Summer Camp Director, at email@example.com
